Wedding ideas – setting the date and time of the wedding

Setting wedding date
Setting the exact date for your wedding may require quite a lot of juggling and manoeuvring. You need to fit it in with your own personal diaries, and also to make sure that all your special guests will be able to join you on the day; you will also need to make sure that all the facilities that you want for the service, the reception and the honeymoon are available.

Personal diaries
Your main priority will obviously be to choose a date when neither of you is inextricably booked up for anything else! You will need to look at your work calendars to check that you have no important appointments, and you may need to take your time off during a particular month to fit in with your colleagues at work. This is one good reason for choosing the date of your marriage early, so that you can get in first with your bid for holiday dates. If either of you will be involved with exams, job interviews, long-term projects, etc, you will need to arrange your wedding time around these. Don’t forget also that you will need same time clear before the date for the numerous last-minute preparations, and afterwards for the honeymoon and settling into your new home.

Health and weather
If either of you has any health problems these may need to be taken into consideration when setting your wedding date. For instance, if you suffer from hay fever you may wish to avoid your worst months; if you are very prone to colds, bronchitis or flu it will probably be best to avoid an autumn or winter wedding to minimise your chances of being ill on the big day. If you suffer a great deal of discomfort during your periods you may want to plan ahead and try to avoid the worst weeks for your wedding and honeymoon – but remember that weddings are notorious for sending even the most regular menstrual cycle off balance! If lots of your guests will be travelling a long way you will need to take this into account also; it is unfair to inflict long winter journeys on elderly or infirm relatives if they can be avoided.
Family calendars
You will need to make sure that all the people you want to be involved in your wedding will be available on the day that you want. Check your proposed date with both sets of parents, your best man, bridesmaids and other attendants.
Inevitably some of the guests that you invite will be unable to come for one reason or another, but ask around beforehand to ensure that any guests you particularly want to be there will be free on the proposed date.

Finances
It used to be the case that there were certain times of the year that were more advantageous than others for weddings from a tax point of view. This is not currently the case, but watch the budgets to make sure!

Honeymoon
You may need to set the date of your wedding during a particular month because of your choice of honeymoon. For instance, if you want to have a walking holiday in the Lake District you would do best to avoid a wedding in the depths of winter; if you want to catch the sun in Australia, it is no use getting married in midsummer here!

Availability
Once you have sorted out your personal diaries, one of the main considerations will be the availability of the venues that you want to use. Many churches get booked up for weddings many months in advance, so talk to the minister early on in your plans so that you won’t be disappointed. Church weddings used not to be allowed during the main church festivals, such as Lent and Advent, but this is no longer the case. Check also that there will be someone available to marry you – remember that ministers have holidays and unavoidable engagements just like the rest of us! Check also on the venue that you want for your reception; once again, picturesque or well-known restaurants and hotels may be booked up months in advance.
